Create a Monster

What happens to bad socks? They turn into good little monsters. Check out our crafty directions and turn a knee sock into a cute critter! We used a sample sock from our sock line, once available exclusively on Kickstarter but now on our website here.

You will need:

Needle and thread

1 knee sock

Straight pins

Chopstick

Buttons for eyes

Felt for mouth

Polyfill stuffing

1. Cut off the foot of the sock at the ankle. Save the foot section for later, and concentrate on what is now a long tube of sock fabric.

 2. You can cut off the upper band of fabric as well, but we decided to leave it alone and make it our monster’s feet. Of course, this made the TV design on him upside-down, but we think this adds to his charm. (Well, it was originally a mistake!)

3. Cut out the inner edges of two legs on one end of the tube, and a pair of ears on the other end. Leave the sides of the tube alone — this will make sewing everything up much quicker.

4. Flip the sock inside-out and pin together the edges that you are going to sew up! Leave a couple of inches of space in the crotch where you will turn your monster the right way out again.

5. Sew it up! This could be done with a sewing machine, but a needle and thread work just as well. You can use a thread color that matches, or one that clashes. When you are done, turn everything right-side-out.

6. Now, give him some polyester guts.You can use a chopstick to push the polyfil into your monster’s ears and legs.

7. Sew up his crotch. We’ll politely look away.

8. Make your monster a pair of arms. We discarded the heel of the foot section from earlier, then cut the rest of the foot in half to make two little arm tubes. Sew them inside-out, just like the rest of the monster, then flip and fill them with stuffing.

9. Attach arms. This is a little tricky, but it helps to position the arms with a pin or two and work slowly.

10. Give him a face! We used two types of buttons for eyes, and felt for his mouth and teeth.
